Fastnet Rock serves as the mid-way point for the famous Fastnet yachting race that starts and ends in England. The last time the race was run, in 2007, the Ireland team won for the first time.
Fastnet Rock Lighthouse and fog also figure into the sinking of the Lusitania. Travelling east on May 7, 1915, the Lusitania encountered fog a short way before passing the lighthouse. The ship had just passed the lighthouse when a German U-boat fired on it and sank it. This sinking played a major role in the United States' decision to enter WW1.
